Artist type simulator
Who actually keeps the money?
Independent artist
Usually keeps a higher share of master royalties after a distributor fee. Full creative and financial control.
Indie label artist
Splits revenue with the label in exchange for marketing, A&R and distribution support.
Major label artist
Revenue is reduced by recoupment, advances, contract splits and distribution costs.
Producer / beatmaker
Typically earns from master points, beat sales, and publishing splits negotiated per record.
Label owner
Keeps the label share after artist splits, distribution fees and operating costs.
Why results vary
No platform pays a fixed rate.
Streaming revenue depends on dozens of variables. These are the ones that matter most.
Listener country
Payout rates change significantly between markets and currencies.
Subscription vs free
Paid subscribers generate higher per-stream revenue than ad-supported plays.
Ad revenue
Free tiers depend on ad fill rates, which fluctuate quarterly.
Artist market share
Spotify and others use streamshare — your % of total streams sets your payout.
Distributor fees
DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby and UnitedMasters take different cuts.
Label deal
Recoupment, advances and contract splits reduce your net take-home.
Type of rights
Master royalties and publishing royalties are paid separately.
Payment minimums
Some platforms only pay out above a threshold.
Fraud filtering
Botted or invalid streams are stripped before payout calculations.
Platform policy
Each platform updates its payout model on its own schedule.

Streaming royalties, explained.
How much does Spotify pay per stream?
Spotify typically pays between $0.0025 and $0.005 per stream, but the exact amount depends on its streamshare model — your share of total streams on the platform — plus listener country and subscription type.
How much do 1 million streams pay?
1 million streams on Spotify usually generate $2,500 – $5,000 gross. On Apple Music the same volume can pay $6,000 – $10,000. Net revenue after splits, distribution and label deals is typically lower.
How many streams to make $1,000?
On Spotify, you typically need 200,000 – 400,000 streams to gross $1,000. On Apple Music, around 100,000 – 165,000 streams. Use the calculator above for your exact mix of platforms.
Apple Music vs Spotify — which pays more?
Apple Music generally pays more per stream because it has no free tier — every play comes from a paying subscriber. Spotify reaches more listeners overall.
Why is YouTube Music payout so low?
YouTube blends audio streams, video views, Content ID claims, and ad revenue. Ad-supported plays pay significantly less than premium subscribers.
